Book Review of the Month:
"George Muller, Man of Faith & Miracles"
"George Muller of Bristol" By Arthur T. Pierson
Once the organization was able to operate through staff administrators and Muller had authored an autobiography, God sent him at 70 years of age to conduct 17 world tours (to 42 nations, covering 200,000 miles by land and water) to share the testimony of the mighty outpouring of God’s marvelous provisions in caring for these orphans. As a result similar orphanages were birthed around the world as Muller’s faith sparked the potential in men’s hearts to trust God in this same manner.
The book reveals a continual communion this man had with God which causes one to not only yearn for that same closeness but also to desire to know God with the same intimacy as to receive from Him daily. Muller saturated his life with prayer and study of the word of God, gathering the staff together in prayer three times every day petitioning for provisions. He waged a great war in the spiritual realm and through his perseverance he experienced God’s supernatural power time and time again exemplifying that we too can yield our entire will to God and can receive this same “manna from heaven” as did Muller.
In extreme contrast are the details revealing that this man actually spent most of his youth in sinful lusts and pursuits making the reader to know the certainty of God’s great love, forgiveness, compassion and mercy for mankind in spite of our sinfulness. His riotous lifestyle encompassed forgery, lying, various falsehoods and eventually gave him the reputation of a thief, as he not only “collected” money from his own father but his schoolmates as well.
His father learning that he could not trust the lad with anything of value, determined that George should be trained in “religion” only because this was a dependable and respectable occupation at the time. He received a well-rounded education in many schools and went to a university pursuing this occupation but only had an interest in secular subjects. His “extra curricular activities” while at school caused him to accrue many unpaid debts at hotels and when caught had to leave his clothes behind in payment, as he had nothing else!!!
George finally came to realize the career his father had chosen for him was right and that if he didn’t start showing some signs of right living that no one would hire him as a pastor. Thus he began his vain attempts to correct a lifestyle filled with debauchery. This situation was what God used to get his attention and soon began the battle between the flesh and the spirit. He is termed as the “man whom God made” and God patiently and enduringly allowed this man to see his own wretchedness so that He could then reveal His great love and pardon of him through Christ’s sacrifice.
This man’s life was a powerful example to us for years and as we studied his faith walk it also sparked a great passion within us to know God deeper and to experience God’s miraculous provision. His life so encouraged us and built our faith that we too began to see the supernatural hand of God perform many of the same miraculous provisions in our lives and ministry which has carried on for 20 years.
We pray that as you read of the wonders that God performed through Muller that you too may fall in love with our precious Lord and experience the same great love, power, provision and intimacy of knowing Him. As Christians, our lives are meant to be an open book to the world in demonstration of power in the Spirit that God is a God of love and mercy and is more than able to supply every need they have through prayer and complete trust and dependence on Him. Life in Him can be one of peace, fulfillment and joy but we only find that when we ultimately abandon our hearts to Him and by faith trust Him to do His will through us.
